3rd Year (2017-2018)
Now looking downhill at the rest of my time in college, I felt it would be appropriate to try and examine how experiences I have had in the past year have impacted my personal trajectory. Time in college is an odd thing, with some lectures feeling epic in length and full semesters seem to blow by quickly. Returning a glance to the fall of 2017, nothing of great note comes to mind. UC Football was banal and classes were standard as I completed the last of my general business courses. I completed my term as treasurer for my fraternity and while I enjoyed my time on the executive team, hassling others to pay dues and rent was something I was happy to be past. Near the end of the fall, I truly felt like I had arrived at a crossroads.
As a younger student I explored a variety of organizations and held some smaller positions. These provided me with a nice perspective on campus involvement and through what organizations I could channel my passions. However, I would need to choose in what organization I wanted to take a leap into a big position. I took a great deal of soul searching and decided to apply for Homecoming Chair for the Student Alumni Council. I was lucky enough to achieve the position and having this opportunity has been significant on my future. This position will finally test my leadership ability so that I can see if I can organize and facilitate an event. I must keep up with committee chairs and ensure that tasks are being done and my team feels they have the tools to succeed. While I chose to be Homecoming Chair due to my passion for SAC and my love of the University of Cincinnati, a successful Homecoming will be a fantastic story to tell future employers. Plenty of students can be presidents of organizations, but few are able to have the opportunity to facilitate activities and a celebration that involves thousands of students and alumni. I feel certain, even before Homecoming is done, that choosing this position was the best for me. I can channel my passion for my school through this project and I will be testing myself in ways that I would have never imagined.
Naturally, throughout the spring of 2018 I began to select my committee and build upon some ideas for the celebration. I plan to undertake an Honors Experience reflecting upon my experience in the fall build-up to October 6th, so stay tuned to this site for my ongoing and final thoughts about the position.
Focusing upon the fall semester, I must now accept that I will be facing adulthood and full-time employment in the future. I would be a liar if I did not say the idea gave me some serious anxiety. I am happy to have had the opportunity to co-op at different companies, but if anything it has further illustrated to me that I have no clue where I will end up after graduation in spring of 2020. Due to this, a goal I have for myself in the next academic year is to explore more upon what I want my career to be. I would like to explore the opportunity to maybe co-op abroad or in a wildly different department than my previous experiences. Another goal I have for myself is to travel more. After studying abroad for one month in Munich my freshman year, I have wanted to return to Europe since. My dream is to take time and explore the villages and cities my ancestors are from, but I would settle with going anywhere abroad. Lastly, I have a goal to maximize my time in college with friends and doing the things I truly enjoy. I will leave with some wisdom I have learned on my co-op with Rotex, to live with BLISS (Because Life Is So Short). One can be handed heavy blows in life, but is important to keep this idea in mind, to never settle and to relentlessly chase your passions. We only have so much time and with only two more years at UC I hope to chase my BLISS with the rest of my time in Clifton.
